Anthony R. Burton, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Anthony Burton joined Fayetteville Surgical Associates in 1991 after a decade of extensive experience in trauma and critical care at Level I and Level II trauma centers in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.  He is presently on active staff at Washington Regional Medical Center where he has served as Chief of Surgery and Director of the Wound Care Center.

Dr. Burton was born in Texarkana , Arkansas , graduated from the UAMS College of Pharmacy in 1975.  He earned his bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1977 and earned his M.D. from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine in 1982.  He then completed a five-year general surgery residency at Methodist Hospital in Dallas , Texas where he served as chief resident in 1987.

Dr. Burton was certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1989 and re-certified in 1999.  he is a member of the American Medical Association, the Arkansas Medical Society, the Washington County Medical Society and the American Trauma Society and has been a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 1991.  He is also an active participant on the Washington Regional Trauma Committee and the Washington Regional Tumor Board.

The past 20 years as a busy surgeon have provided Dr. Burton with a wide-range of experience in vascular surgery as well as all types of cancer surgery including intestinal, pancreas, thyroid, stomach, breast, colon, rectal, liver, melanoma and sarcomas.  He has extensive experience and high-level training in complex open and laparoscopic surgery, including gallbladder, appendix, hernia, GERD/hiatal hernia, and pediatric surgery.  A special interest in caring for patients who need improvement of circulation to the body and its extremities and diabetic wound care have allowed Dr. Burton to establish a large practice in care of patients with peripheral vascular disease and limb threatening infections.

With the completion of nearly 200 hours of continuing medical education annually, Dr. Burton’s strong commitment to the latest technology and state-of-the-art medical procedures is real and demonstrable.  In addition to trauma, critical care, and cancer surgery, Dr. Burton’s expertise also includes peripheral vascular surgery, abdominal aneurysms, carotid and extremity artery disease, laparoscopic surgery and serious, life threatening injuries and infections.  A member of the hospital ethics committees in Dallas , Fort Worth and Fayetteville , Dr. Burton’s continuing education endeavors also include the complicated and often controversial questions surrounding medical ethics.

Dr. Burton is married to Dr. Phyllis Miller, an award-winning journalist who earned her Ph.D. in institutional public relations and media management from Texas A&M University .  She is presently a professor of journalism and the coordinator of the public relations program at the University of Arkansas .  They have four children: Michelle, Randy, Karen and Kyle.
